thanks josh.... your the man
Gerald,
Can you help explain how your skill set/experience will affect the Cowboys’ defense this year?
Are you solely working at Strong Safety or with your skills and Ken Hamlin’s, will we see a hybrid of the traditional Free/Strong Safety positions?
Thanks,
Ray
Kick ass! I love when players take the time to give back to the fans. I gotta tell you, I'm quite excited to see what you can give us on the field this year! Do me a favor and whoop some major ass so you too can get a chunk of Jerry's coin. Good luck and stay healthy Sensi! (Hope you don't mind that name.)

Great Question... I'm going in to my fifth year in the nfl and i have played behind to good safeties eary in my career. 1. Dovovan Darius- known for big hits, high intensity, always around the football. 2. Deon Grant known for his coverage ability and good ball skills. What i did as a player was try to combine the two together to mold myself in that image. In jacksonville i played beside reggie nelson who is pretty good himself. I was pretty much the down safety doing a lot of run stopping on first and second downs. In passing situations i would do most of the covering when in man coverage rather it be a slot WR or TE. So i've had a lot of snaps at run stuffing and covering during last season. In dallas i will be at the strong safety position and Ken will be the free. In the 3-4 defense it mainly stops the run and puts a lot of pressure on the secondary because we all know the Cowboys love man coverage. So my job is to cover and cap the run. I think this defense is great for what i have molded my career for. So expect me to make a lot of plays and show my coverage ability which i am looking forward to. My rookie year in jax they experienced me at corner and every year i get snaps playing the inside slot.

Gerald, so thankful to have you with the Cowboys, and yes, it's a special thing when a player of your caliber takes the time to talk with fans!! I've been impressed with your play, and was ecstatic when you signed with my fav team. I'm currently trying to find your jersey here in Colorado so I can have it on when you come to Invesco to whoop up on the Broncos Oct 10th! I also want you to have a "SENSA-tional" year so you can bank with a long term with the 'Boys! Look forward to completion of the site (great job, Josh) and you're already tagged as a favorite! Hope to get the chance to meet you in person after the Denver game -E.
Thanks... I am loving being a cowboy.. Lots of great fans like yourself. The jersey is probably not out in stores so you will need to go to nfl.com and make a custom one. It would be great if i could see you in Denver wearing 43.

Welcome to Big D, G.
MoneyShot knew you were an athletic safety who isn't afraid to put a hat on the ball, but when MoneyShot read your bio and the 46 vert at the combine he had to do a double take. WTF??? Numbers like that aint human. That's exactly what Dallas needs though, a safety with agility that looks like a free safety, runs like a corner, and hits like a strong safety. Now that you have the Star on your helmet, get your Shine on.
Oh, and welcome to the NFC Beast, where anything and everything about Philadelphia, the Redskins, and the VaGiants is hated around here. In fact, MoneyShot requests that you dispose all articles of clothing that are Philly green, even that Theo Huxtible green sweater that grandma sent as a gift back in the day. Don't act like you don't have one b/c G-ma's all over the world send Cosby sweaters, even MoneyShot has one.
MoneyShot knows you were part of a good rivalry with the Steelers, so bring some of that new blood intensity to the Beast. Dallas needs to learn how to take a punch to the mouth from the Eagles and counter that with a flurry of haymakers.
Question: MoneyShot wants to know the story behind choosing the number 43, since it is an uncommon number. College #? Highschool ??
thanks.... yeah that verticle jump everybody talks about. In college i was at 42 inches and i trained like crazy pre-draft on the vertmax and perfecting my technique. When i went to do my vert i told them to put the bar at where 40inches would be for me (everybody laughed and said "yeah right"). I jumped a 44 on the first jump and everybody looked amazed. The second one i jumped the 46 and then they told me i broke the combine record. THE RIVALS.... I wear no such colors of those of our rivals. That was the first thing i learned when i came to dallas. THE NUMBER 43.... Throughout my life i never chose numbers i just took whatever i was givin. So my theory is, "Whatever number they give me, I have to make it work". Highschool #9 College #14 NFL #43 so u can see i have been everywhere on the number chart. I was teased some in jax because everybody thought it looked ugly (u know those pretty boy players). By the time i made a couple of plays it looked really good. Now i love the number and hope i never have to change it.

So I just had to tell my wife, "This cat actually monitors his site AND takes the time to talk with people" I hope you never lose that, and I hope and pray you're on the way to Canton as a Cowboy! You are not only a very talented player, but a TOGETHER human being to interact with fans! I am definitely ordering a custom Sensabaugh jersey THIS WEEK with a rush so I can wear it in Denver! And I'll PROUDLY wear it, it's also cool that 43 was my number in high school (still got the jersey). Thanks for being an athlete with the grace to have humility and character! 43 ROCKS, can't wait for the year to start -E.
MoneyShot: By the way, Great comments, you know your ball! I was also amazed when I heard about the 46 inch vertical...I am so jacked to have GS43 on our team!
This year i'm going to try my best to interact with fans and get them closer to the game. I appreciate you joining the site, it means a lot to me. In the future i will have trivia questions with the chance to win prizes through the website. If u have any ideas feel free to let me know and i will do my best to accomodate the needs for fans. Thanks for joining the site, i really appreciate it.

Hey Gerald...your site looks good...good luck this season
Shouldn't this be called the 'Sensablaugh'?
Looking forward to the season and good luck to you and the Boys. I was wondering if you could give us some insights on what goes through your head just before the ball is snapped. Key reads, shifts, back-and-forth between the offense and defense...that kind of "inside" info.
Thanks,
JK
Before the snap there are many reads. The main read is identifying the formation. Once the formation is identified it will give u a big clue on rather its left, right run.... short, deep pass. Through film study you notice that a lot of teams are repetitive, so before the snap you can take a highly educated guess. If i'm thinking run, i might play a little closer to the line. The passing game can be tricky but if u can realize that football is football and that most teams run the same route combinations just out of diff. formations, it can give you clues. So I pay attention to the splits of the WR's and i can get big clues of where they are going. Film study is the biggest part of the NFL. The more you know about your opponent, the better chance you have at executing against your opponent. And also down and distance is a huge part. If it is 3rd and 12 everybody knows its going to be pass. 3rd and inches ..probably run. 1st and 10 you have to play honest because anything can occur. A tricky down is 2nd and short because teams can run to get the easy first down, but a lot of teams will take a shot(go deep for the home run). So on that down I like to play honest and maybe a little deeper. Great question.

First of all, thanks for taking the time to spend it with the fans. I've been singing your praises on the Cowboys.com website and to all my Boy's fans here in the Carolinas. I don't know if some of the Cowboys fans realize what we've acquired with your addition. I live in SC and we get a lot of Jaguars games televised here so I know what you bring to the team. Now to nuts and bolts, replacing you know who, how do you think you'll be able to contribute immediately to the team? It's obvious you are highly intelligent and game saavy but we are in dire need of better pass coverage at the strong safety position this season. Do you think that coverage or run stopping will be your biggest impact?
I would have to say that i feel that i will make the most impact in the passing game. Here in dallas we have a great front 7 who's dominant against the run. I do plan on getting my share of run stopping, but for me right now my main focus is to play good coverage. I'm very fortunate to have some great pass rushers who can get sacks or force bad throws. So i'm excited to get a chance to play where the pass rush is going to be there and knowing that the balls are going to be coming out fast. I'm expecting our secondary to get lots if int's, especially with how athletic everybody is.

Coverage = sacks, great to hear! It is what we've been lacking in that position. Good luck with the new season and best of luck in big D. Thanks for the response Gerald, can't wait to see you wearing the star.
Thanks for your earlier response. Per other messages, it is great for a Cowboys fan to have such contact with a player.
Building on your previous reply on reads, when you read scouting reports on players, you see the terms “instinct,” ”nose for the ball,” etc. From a player’s perspective is “instinct” just experience/pre-snap reads or is it something else? For example, I have read in draft guides about top prospects in the draft having great instincts. As a college junior/senior, how much experience do you really have to gain “instinct” when you play against offenses that are not as complex as NFL offenses? What in your view is the most important skill to have as a NFL safety/player? Can this skill overcome a lack of speed? As for speed, when you ran a 4.44 at the combine, what would your time be if you were running in full pads on grass/turf?
How grueling is a NFL training camp? If a player is in “shape” for OTA/mini-camp and works out pre-training camp, is he “ready” for training camp or is it that no matter how hard you train, you just can’t simulate the physicality of full contact/training camp? Where do you think you are now and what do you need to do in the next 2 weeks if anything?
Thanks,
Ray
Great Questions, Ok i'm not a draft expert or anything but instincts are the natural reaction that u have when things happen. How quickly can a player react on the fly such as (an unexpected douple team block, reaction to a double move by WR's, picking up a blitzer that wasn't identified). I'm not sure but i think that is what they are meaning. Nose for the football is along the lines of (able to diagnose a play while it is occuring, knowing pre-snap reads, does their job consistantly.
I believe there is no set skills for a safety to have because it depends on what defense your in. Some teams like bigger safeties and some smaller and faster. The safety position is very unique because u have to be able to run with the wr's and make tackles like a linebacker. So it really depends on the teams needs.
If a safety has less speed he must have those good instincts to make up for it (thats at any position). Really, less speed means lack of recovery speed. So u have to put yourself in good situations at all times.
Training camp is a time to fine tune everything because players pretty much learn the plays during ota's. Training camp is where players must seperate themselves from others because its a battle for jobs. So everybody is bringing their A game and if you've worked hard it will show, if you slacking the coaches will see. The preseason games introduce the team to gameplaning which isn't done during ota's. There is more contact involved with drills and everything is on the line. I love the competition during training camp because there is so much pressure and the coaches are less tolerant of errors.
During training camp i plan to perfect the whole defensive system and establish the feel for the game in this 3-4 scheme. Like every year i try to help the younger players with tips that i've learned over my career. I wish all players a long, healthy, succesfull career. Thanks for the post.

Gerald,
In the offseason (now) and during the season, how much time do you spend (daily, weekly) on film study, playbook study, etc. when you are not at practice?
In your private time, when you watch film and study the playbook, is that something you do by yourself or do you get together with your teammates?
In your experience in the league and as a mid-round draft pick, is it pretty clear to see a different standard in allowing mistakes between a 1st round draft pick and an undrafted free agent? Also, how quickly does an undrafted free agent, low round draft pick, or mid-round pick have to impress the coaches before a 1st or 2nd round pick does? (1 mistake and out?)
Can you tell early on who is going to make the team or not? (For example, if a player looks great in OTA/mini-camp without pads, do you know that no matter how great they look, you know that once full pads/contact drills start, that player has no shot of making the team?)
Thanks.
Ray
This year i spent more than normal watching film in the offseason. I was learning a new defense and i also wanted to get familiar with the teams in the division. I went through those 6 games a few times trying to get a heads up of how our division attacks us. I learned a lot. I would usually watch a game a day. I sometimes watch film by myself but other times there might be a group already in there, and i would just join the party.
I believe the roles are kind of different in where u are drafted. Early picks are usually thrown into the fire because of need at the position. later and undrafted guys usually get their start with special teams. That may be why it looks like early guys get more chances. I know my role early on was special teams.
Coming from jacksonville, there was no clue who was going to make the team. Every year they were known for keeping undrafted free agents. I have seen them cut draft picks and keep ufa's. Whoever brings more to the table and can provide immediate help usually makes the team. I have seen a guy get 0 reps in practice at his position and make the team as a special teams guy. You just never know. great questions?
GS 43
Well, camp starts in days and I would imagine there's excitement mixed with some anxiety and eagerness to get started. From what's been said on the Cowboys official site, your job is pretty much sealed and they say they are counting on you and Mr. Hamlin to shore up the safety positions. Having that confidence going into camp, does it allow you to ineract with some of the rookies and ufa's and give advice? There's been a lot of concern about the lack of leadership on the team. How important do you think it is to have that "heart" of the defense (or offense), a person that is considered the leader of their unit. Mike Singletary, the late great Reggie White and Charles Haley come to mind and in Dallas more recently Woodsen (who by all acounts was a fine mentor though not overly vocal or over the top). Chemistry is everything it seems to me, but thats from a fans prospective, how much importance do you place on veteran leadership?
Chemistry is the number and leadership are 2 of the main parts of football. Football is a team sport so we must count on everybody to do their job. One person can't take over a football game and win it by himself. So if the team chemistry is good often times the team will be good.
Every team has their share of leaders. A leaders job is to lead by example and show everybody else the way. Veterans usually already know the flow of things but the rookies have to catch up quickly.
Thanks Gerald and watch that TX heat, it's no fun but it was always an advantage the Cowboys had in conditioning. Teams deflated like a flat tire at the beginning of the season. Good luck on camp and again, I look forward to watching this year, I have a great feeling about the D this year and know you guys will do well.
I am use to playing in the heat. The heat is an advantage, what we did in jacksonville was wear our white jerseys at home and made the visiting team wear their colors. So during the year we wore white jerseys far more than teal. Teams would also deflate and was kind of funny.
Whatup Sensei, I was just wondering who in your opinion is the most dangerous offensive player among our NFC Beast rivals? Good luck this year, glad to finally have a legit secondary.
i would have to say......Brian Westbrook. because he can do so much much and they line him up everywhere. He is a player you have to game plan for.
GS 43
Gerald,
Any early impressions for the first couple of training camp days? Any rookie/young player standing out yet?
Have you see the Madden 2010 rankings for yourself? I saw that your jumping rating (95) was equal to Newman's. I guess the Madden folks didn't weigh your Combine record. I am looking forward to the Madden folks having to correct your Catching (56) and Strength (62) scores.
For fun, I looked at a comparison with other team's rookies to see how wrong the Madden rating is. It is fascinating that a rookie QB (Stafford) has a higher rating (79) that a veteran like Kitna (68) or your former teammate David Garrard (78)
Do you ever get together with teammates and play as yourselves?
Thanks,
Ray
There are a lot of rookies looking good out there. In the secondary, Mickens, Hamlin, and Smith are all doing a great job.
I think sometimes maddens ratings are off but its cool. I just enjoy being a part of the game. When the game comes out i'm sure we will play against each other. Some guys take the madden game to serious and get real competitive with it. I just cant wait for it to come out.
I think Hamlin will be a great player, watched a lot of Clemson (not neccesarily by choice but by location LOL - gotta dog Clemson when I can) but he was a great player on a team that basically has been falling apart for a coule of years due to coaching issues that finally came to light last year. I think he will be an excellent player and would have drafted much higher had the team lived to it's potential. I know we'll be fine in the DB category, it's receiving that I'm worried about. I know you can't say too much...but I think they should have gotten Matt Jones, Stanback is apparently doing well so far but both he Austin and Hurd have some question marks from last season. Do you think we're okay in that regard. I know it's not your focus now but word is everybody's pretty confident in the DB area, receivers are the area nobody can agree on. What's your take if you can give one at this point?
I can tell you that we have some really talented recievers on the offense. They are running clean routes and theres not many drops. I feel the recievers shouldn't be an area of concern. Those boys can play.

I'm forever an optimist and I have faith too, good to hear that from a player though. I think the pieces are in place for a fantastic season. Thanks again Sensy.
Good Luck Out There
Hey Sensy, Rob Phillips was talking about you on his blog on dallascowboys.com, along with some fans who are friends and in San Antone. Apparently you REALLY impressed them with your reps opposite Marty B. (is he really that crazy BTW? he's hilarious). They say you pretty much shut him down which impressed people because he is expected to do big things, especially with that two TE set. Way to go man!
yeah marty b. is doing a great job out there. He's great to do one on one drills with because he's so big and fast for a TE. But thanks!
